Tucked away among the rolling green hills of Devon between the cathedral city of Exeter and the wilderness of Dartmoor, you’ll find the gentle grey stuccoed splendour of the Lord Haldon Hotel.
Once one of the finest estates of the Georgian period, the Lord Haldon is a warm and welcoming host for romantic, country weddings.
Let us walk you through how your day could look.
As you and your guests make your way down the rose-lined drive and turn the corner to arrive in a “Carriage Sweep”, you’ll catch sight of our breathtaking views across miles of Devon countryside.
The main house, a fine example of Georgian architecture, sits nestled in the shelter of Haldon Hill, with mature trees and pretty gardens falling away towards the panoramic views.
You could choose to stay the night before for a relaxing start to the day, or to arrive after your guests and make a stunning entrance.
If you choose us to host your wedding ceremony, we have a dedicated dressing room for the bride and her entourage. Complete with a view of hotel arrivals, plenty of space for clothes, makeup and accessories, a table of refreshments and a magnificent mirror, it’s perfect for a memorable morning getting ready. You have the choice of two locations for the wedding itself.
Our outdoor covered gazebo is surrounded by lush planting and lawns, set amongst flower beds which bloom abundantly each summer. We have space for up to 80 guests to sit on the lawn either side of the paved pathway.
Inside, our Belvedere Suite can be transformed into a stunning ceremony space, with the option of our pretty outside courtyard to gather in before and after the wedding and a red carpet ready to be rolled out for the bride’s arrival.
In good weather, drinks and canapes can be served on the lawn, in the gardens or courtyard, allowing your guests the freedom to mill around in the sunshine. For winter weddings or if the weather turns, we have a separate bar and sitting area just opposite the ceremony space with plenty of room for guests to mingle.
Our experienced wedding team will be on hand to guide you and your guests through every part of the day, right up until your last dance.
Our Georgian architecture makes the job easy for your photographer, with a multitude of pretty locations. In summer, you can make use of a first floor balcony which is smothered with gorgeous Rambling Rector roses, whilst many couples also choose the Georgian stable archway as a perfect place to pose, with its stunning backdrop of the Devon countryside.
The gardens have many romantic corners for photography, including the crumbling external wall of the main wing of the old mansion, now covered with vines, flowers and climbing plants. We also have a number of heritage trees still standing as they would have done in the mansion’s heyday, more than 300 years ago.
Whilst your guests are busy congratulating you and celebrating your marriage with a drink, we’ll be transforming the Belvedere Suite into your reception room, with tables for the Wedding Breakfast and a dance floor.
We can organise a DJ for your night, or you can book any band of your choosing. With the spectacular views across the valley, we can also arrange a fireworks display, or you can bring in some evening entertainment of your own.
As a country house hotel, we only ask that the party ends at midnight.
Whether you choose a sit down meal, or a casual buffet, our chefs can create the menu you’ve been hoping for. For more traditional dining, we’ll set up the Belvedere Suite to sit up to 180, providing all the furnishings – white linen, crockery, glasses, tableware, chair covers and sashes. You can choose to further personalise the space with your own floristry, centrepieces and any other decoration.
For a more relaxed evening, we can provide a BBQ in the central courtyard, with seating options in the enclosed and sheltered yard itself, or inside the Belvedere Suite. To accompany your Wedding Breakfast, you’ll have your own bar within the suite.
Our wedding couples have the choice of no fewer than three bridal suites for their stay. Each is a light, spacious room, with great views and large luxurious bathrooms – they also have a birds-eye view of the outdoor ceremony area, perfect for spotting arrivals without being seen.
Many couples choose to book two bridal suites, offering the chance for the bride and groom to stay the night before, but keeping apart, as is tradition. There are 23 rooms in total, offering plenty of accommodation for all your closest friends and family, and the opportunity for a relaxing get together the following morning over breakfast.
